Hātea Kapa Haka
Hātea was formed in 2000 by the whānau of Pēhiāweri Marae. The membership is drawn from the whānau of the marae and extends to others who reside in Whangārei as well as from Auckland.
Hātea is focused on maintaining and upholding Ngā mahi ā Te Rēhia me Tānerore and strives to contribute to the excellence of Māori performing arts.
Highlights for the roopu have included representing Tai Tokerau at Te Matatini in 2002, 2005, 2007, 2009, 2011, 2013 and 2015. Hātea won Te Taonga ā Te Rōpū Waiata Māori o Aotearoa for the best Waiata-Tira (choral) performance at Te Matatini 2013, taking it out for a third time having won in 2007 and 2011. Hātea will again represent Tai Tokerau next week at Te Matatini 2017 in Hastings.
Regular performances at Waitangi Day Celebrations, Te Koroneihana, Iwi and community events are an opportunity for Hātea to share their whakaaro and culture. .
The development of original compositions has provided Hātea the vehicle to propagate their whakaaro on topical issues and capture for posterity the feats and qualities of Iwi and whanau identities.
Hātea are the current 2 Degrees – Super 12 champion, winning in 2012,2013 and 2014 & 2015 performing as “Whangārei mai Tawhiti”.
Kapa Haka is a positive kaupapa for the whānau of Pēhiāweri Marae –, this kaupapa is by design a sustainable development project for the marae that encourages participation by all, irrespective of age, gender or ability.
