With the opening of our Wharenui in 1991, our Kaumatua then began the planning for stage two of our Marae complex, the Whare Whakairo. Since then our Kaumatua & Kuia that had the knowledge of our kōrero, history and whakapapa have all passed on. The present generation has now taken the reigns and importance of completing stage two for the next generation to restore, revive and regain that which has laid dormant.

The Whare Whakairo is the carving of all buildings, internal and external including the gateway to the Church and perimeter of the Marae complex. We have broken down the Marae Whare Whakairo project into five or more stages to be manageable.

The desire is to have our Marae carved to depict the history of the people, places and events that tell our stories. Pehiaweri Marae will continue to be for whanau and many people their place of belonging.

This project is the revitalisation of our stories and the events that are unique to who we are and the community. The stories will be captured in the carvings and other design work that will adorn our Marae. Our vision is for the Marae and surrounding communities to come together to share and remember those connections and historical events. This will be a permanent record of times passed.

With an insurgence of apprentice carvers in our community and the skills of many of our young people in design and art, this project gives the opportunity to be a learning ground on a live project.
